Independent Artist PSA

I get music submissions daily — via private message, via comments to my status updates, via my professional Facebook Page, via emails, via form submissions on my blog, etc. I get it. I post all the time about the music industry and I am highly active in and around the music industy. To some, I am among the gatekeepers (considering I own a music video network that earns upwards of 3 million monthly impressions, one could call me a gatekeeper).

HOWEVER, I am no A&R. I am neither a songwriter nor a composer. I can’t play an instrument and my hearing is at best civilian. I am a music business expert and prefer to provide feedback on business inquiries and not creative ones.

The “check out my new single” messages pile up in my inboxes. Unfortunately, I do not have the time (nor the patience) to listen to them all. And to be honest, it is not my area of expertise to offer creative feedback.

I take pride in the feedback and guidance that I offer to individuals and the knowledge that I share as a writer and public speaker. I strive to add value when I can, but that means refusing to comment on areas that are not speciality.

Yes, I am a trained vocalist and yes I’ve managed artists/songwriters/composers/djs, but as they can tell you, they’d sooner call me about a publishing deal than get my feedback on the cadence in a recording. LOL

That being said, if you’re an independent artist reading this, I apologize if I haven’t replied to your “check out my music” message. But you don’t really need my feedback there. I’d rather check out your production contract, licensing agreement, or marketing plan.

Musically yours,
Dae Bogan
