Thanks to my buddy Mark Adato, and his work with the organization Africa New Day, I got to help two African independent artists from Congo with career advice. This year, through my mentorship work at SXSW and through AND, I’ve been honored to give career advice to artists in the Caribbean and Africa.
Independent artists in the United States take for granted our relatively easy and abundant access to information and resources related to the music business. Many of the artists in Africa and Carribean do not even know how to get their music on iTunes. They want desperately to share their music. I’m proud that I’ve been able to help a few get started on the right path.
I’ve even used my in-store music video network, which plays in all Shiekh Shoes stores across the United States, to showcase artists from Africa and the Caribbean to my 3 million viewers.
Connecting the diaspora through music, demonstrating our similarities through musical storytelling, and showing that entertainment defies boarders has been a humbling experience.
If you are reading this and you are an artist from Africa, reach out to Africori, which describes itself as a Pan-African music company for artists and labels. Their website is http://africori.com. They may be able to help with getting music distributed. Also, learn about copyrighting your music and collecting music royalties in your territory. You can find more information by talking to Music In Africa foundation. Their website is http://musicinafrica.net.
SXSW (aka South by Southwest) is one of my favorite conference series where creators and technologists converge around content, innovation, and industry issues. It’s a place for discovering and being discovered, a place for inspiration, a place to conduct business, and a place to build new lasting relationships. And from the never-ending day parties, concerts, brand activations, and Austin nightlife, it’s fun as heck!
As a SXSW Mentor, I have the privilege of participating in one-on-one sessions with SXSW attendees who seek feedback on their projects/careers/startups and insight based on my areas of expertise and experience in digital media and the music industry.
This year I will be participating as a Mentor for the SXSW Interactive Conference (March 11-15) in the Startup Village track and SXSW Music Conference (March 15-20) in the Music Tech & Format Wars track. I will also be present at the SXSW Music Hackathon Championship where hackers use their programming knowledge and a collection of music-tech APIs to develop their industry-changing prototypes and compete for over $10,000 in prizes, awarded by our panel of celebrity judges.
For my mentor session schedule and to reserve a slot with me, see my schedule at http://sxsw.is/1KYDFO2.

Pretty much everyone involved in the music industry is aware of Austin’s annual SXSW, but they may not be as familiar with SXSW V2V, a festival which focuses on the development of startups and entrepreneurial skills. Included here is a breakdown of the three music-related startups of particular note. Read full article here.
We know it feels like SXSW 2015 happened just yesterday, but we’re already beginning to look towards next year. Mark your calendars: artist applications for the 2016 SXSW Music Festival will open on Monday, June 29.
Sonicbids will return as the official SXSW Music Festival application platform for 2016. Once you set up your Sonicbids Electronic Press Kit and apply for SXSW 2016, your band will have access to a vast network of promoters and booking agents which will enable you to look for gigs outside of SXSW.
The initial application fee will be $33. More information on application deadlines will be announced on a later date.
Each year, the SXSW Music Festival presents a great opportunity to network with industry pros and perform with thousands of artists from all over the world.
