Celebrating 1 Year In Colombia, 4 Years With The MLC, And Announcing Music Biz 2024 Panel

Today marks the one year anniversary since I officially moved to Medellin, Colombia 🇨🇴(May 1, 2023) and 4 years since I joined The Mechanical Licensing Collective 🎼 as its Head of Third-Party Partnerships (May 1, 2020).
I am proud of having built a small sense of community here in Medellin with care and intention while simultaneously expanding the impact of my work in the global music industry, particularly by spearheading grassroots outreach initiatives in Latin America and by developing The MLC’s Distributor Unmatched Recordings Portal aka The DURP (www.themlc.com/durp). The DURP has had a direct positive impact on the livelihoods of hundreds of independent artists around the world 🌎 by empowering independent music distributors with data transparency and insights into the music publishing sector.
As a result of this work, I am proud to be named a finalist in the Maestro of Metadata category for this years Music Business Association’ Bizzy Awards and I look forward to joining industry colleagues in Nashville in two weeks for the #MusicBiz2024 conference and the Bizzy Awards dinner.

Dae Bogan Receives Maestro of Metadata Nomination for the 3rd Annual Bizzy Awards
I am honored to announce that I have been named a finalist in the Maestro of Metadata category for the 3rd annual Bizzy Awards presented by the Music Business Association for my work at The Mechanical Licensing Collective (The MLC) as Head of Third-Party Partnerships, particularly in spearheading the Data Quality Initiative (DQI) Partner Program and developing the Distributor Unmatched Recordings Portal (DURP) global initiative.
Through these programs, The MLC has engaged, and I’ve liaised with my close collaborators Raph Amselli, Helena Cook, and Derek Medeiros, over 80 technology companies and music distributors around the world to ensure the integrity of musical works copyright ownership data and to identify and onboard independent music creators and rights-holders to be paid U.S. digital audio mechanical royalties.
I would like to thank the Music Business Association for including me in the finalist pool among fellow industry data nerds and technologists who I’ve had the pleasure of working with in various capacities over the last 10 years.
The 3rd annual Bizzy Awards dinner will take place on Wednesday, May 15 at the JW Marriott Nashville as part of the Music Biz 2024 Conference.

Last year, I collaborated with one of my favorite Latin music industry collaborators, Stephanie Santiago-Rolón, CEO of Elevated Music Industries, to bring The Mechanical Licensing Collective music business workshop into a recording studio in Orlando, Florida.

“From Beat to Bank: Dissecting the Flow of Digital Music Royalties in Rap and Hip-Hop” is an interactive workshop specifically designed for aspiring Hip-Hop and R&B music creators.
Presented by The MLC and Nashville is Not Just Country Music and led by Dae Bogan, Head of Third-Party Partnerships at The MLC, the workshop will take creators through a crash course demystifying the intricate world of music rights, income entitlements, publishing administration and the distribution of U.S. digital music royalties.
Through a series of individual and group simulations, participants will delve into various facets of the industry including contribution and credit tracking, negotiation of splits, the impact of samples on copyrights and royalties, work registrations and the process of claiming royalty shares.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of how song and recording contributions translate into royalty payments from The MLC and other organizations.

Today, there are more beatmakers creating and distributing beats into the global music ecosystem than ever before. While the cost of music production continues to fall, the assortment of creator tools have exploded thanks to innovation in the music technology space; making it easier to create, promote, and collaborate around new beats.
Gone are the days of waiting around to be discovered by a top record label A&R. So-called “bedroom producers” are already connecting with artists and musical groups over social media, beat marketplaces, creator networking platforms and chat rooms. All of this activity has resulted in more beatmakers entering the music business ecosystem and being entitled to certain rights, earning digital music royalties and launching careers. The 2020’s are certainly the decade for beatmakers.

For the past three years, among other responsibilities, I’ve had the honor of developing cultural initiatives at The Mechanical Licensing Collective (The MLC) that shines a spotlight on the works and careers of music creators and music industry professionals from historically underrepresented cultural groups. Through a variety of curated virtual and in-person programs, we’ve unpacked and engaged in discussions on issues impacting the careers and creative expressions of individuals from maginalized groups while conducting outreach and education to welcome songwriters, composers, and lyricists from these groups to join The MLC.
I am pleased to announce my 2023 call for Asian American and Pacific Islander, Black, Latin, LGBTQ, and Native American and Alaska Native music creators and music industry professionals to be considered for cultural programming throughout the year, including key culture/heritage months.
Key months for cultural programming includes:

- Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (May)
- Black Music Month (June)
- LGBT Pride Month (June)
- Hispanic Heritage Month (September-October)
